Treating head injuries

• ABC first!
• Manage unconsciousness
• Protect obvious wound
• Do not plug ears/nose
• Monitor vital signs
• If signs of shock develop – look for other injuries

Because compression raises blood pressure and casualties develop a flushed complexion they can look quite well.

• Injury related breathing problems.
• Airway is priority.
• A bleeding face, then clean it up.
• Avoid fluffy dressings.
• Hand pressure often required.
• Casualties can often walk out.
